What's the difference between the F1 Ultra and the regular F1?

The original F1 uses a 2W infrared laser that marks coated metals only. The F1 Ultra uses a 20W fiber laser that engraves bare metals with deep 3D embossing, thin metal cutting, and color marking capabilities the F1 cannot achieve. The Ultra is also 2.5× faster (10,000mm/s vs. 4,000mm/s) and has a larger work area (8.66" × 8.66" vs. smaller on F1).

Can it really cut metal, or just engrave it?

Both. The 20W fiber laser cuts thin metal sheets: up to 0.4mm brass, 0.3mm stainless steel, and 0.2mm aluminum. It also deeply engraves and embosses thicker metals. The 20W diode laser cuts wood up to 15mm thick and acrylic up to 12mm thick.

What materials can I actually work with?

Fiber laser (20W) handles: All bare metals (stainless steel, aluminum, brass, copper, gold, silver, titanium), plus plastics, ceramics, and stone.

 

Diode laser (20W) handles: Wood, acrylic (opaque), leather, glass, slate, paper, rubber, fabric, coated metals, and anodized aluminum.

 

Cannot engrave: Clear/transparent acrylic (use opaque), PVC (releases toxic fumes), or materials thicker than cutting capacity.

Can it engrave curved items like tumblers and rings?

Yes, two ways:

  1. 3D Curve™ Engraving software automatically adjusts focus across curved surfaces in real-time for items placed flat
  2. RA2 Pro Rotary attachment (sold separately) rotates cylindrical objects like tumblers, mugs, bottles, and rings while engraving

The rotary is recommended for true cylindrical items; 3D Curve works for domed or contoured flat-mounted pieces.

How fast can it actually engrave items?

Real-world speeds at 10,000mm/s:

  • Business card: ~5 seconds
  • Leather keychain: ~6 seconds
  • Dog tag: ~8-10 seconds
  • Tumbler logo: ~30 seconds
  • Full cutting board design: 2-4 minutes

Actual time varies by design complexity and material depth settings.

Can it handle production volume, or is it just for one-offs?

It's designed for production. The Auto Streamline™ Conveyor system (sold separately) uses a built-in camera to automatically recognize shapes on a moving belt and engrave them consecutively without manual positioning. Users report processing 50+ dog tags in under 20 minutes or 30+ tumblers in a lunch break.

How hard is it to learn?

Beginners typically engrave their first project within 30 minutes. The xTool Studio software includes a material library with 400+ pre-configured settings. You select "brass" or "walnut" and the machine uses proven parameters. Autofocus handles thickness automatically. Advanced techniques like 3D embossing require practice, but basic engraving is immediate.

Is ventilation/fume extraction required?

Recommended but minimal. Fiber and diode lasers produce far less smoke than CO2 lasers. Most users either:

  1. Exhaust to a nearby window with flexible ducting
  2. Use xTool's Desktop Air Purifier (optional accessory)
  3. Operate in well-ventilated spaces with air circulation

Material choice affects this; engraving metals produces virtually no fumes; wood produces light smoke.

Is it safe to use around customers and employees?

Yes. The fully enclosed design with safety interlocks meets FDA laser safety standards for consumer devices. The enclosure:

  • Blocks the invisible 1064nm infrared fiber laser radiation
  • Filters harmful blue light from the 455nm diode laser
  • Automatically shuts off lasers when lid opens

It's legally safe for retail stores, craft booths, and public venues, unlike open industrial lasers requiring isolation rooms.

Can I operate it at craft fairs and outdoor events?
