Which laser type fits your material
Fiber and MOPA lasers mark bare metal, anodized aluminum, and coated steel. MOPA adds adjustable pulse control, which is what produces color marking on stainless. Diode lasers engrave and cut wood, leather, acrylic, and painted surfaces at a lower entry cost. IR modules reach plastics and bare metals that a diode alone will not mark. Dual-source machines put both in one enclosure: the xTool F2 Ultra pairs a 60W MOPA with a 40W diode, so a single machine covers metal and organic materials without swapping equipment.
Engraving or cutting
For through-cuts in plywood, acrylic sheet, and leather, look at the enclosed laser cutters: the xTool P2, P2S, and P3. For marking finished goods such as tumblers, tools, knives, and jewelry, a fiber or dual-laser engraver is the better fit. Shops often run both, since the cutter produces the blank and the engraver personalizes it. The F1 and F1 Ultra sit between the two as portable engravers for small parts and on-site work.
