A direct to garment printer sprays water-based ink straight into the fibers of a shirt, so the print stays soft and nothing sits on top of the fabric the way vinyl or a transfer does. DTG earns its place on detailed artwork, photographic prints, and short runs where screen printing setup would cost more than the order itself.
Hybrid, production, and industrial DTG
The Epson SureColor F2270 is a hybrid DTG printer: it prints direct to garment and direct to film from the same machine, so one printer covers cotton tees and DTF transfers for blends and fabrics that DTG struggles with. The SureColor F3070 steps up to industrial volume with a larger platen and faster cycles. Ricoh Ri and Aeoon systems serve high-throughput production floors running all day.
Fabric, pretreatment, and what else you need
Cotton prints best, and 100 percent ring-spun cotton gives the sharpest detail. Blends print acceptably down to around 50 percent cotton, with color shifting as polyester content climbs. Dark garments need pretreatment before white ink will hold, so most shops pair a DTG printing machine with a pretreat unit and a heat press for curing.
